The Catechism of the Catholic Church 2025-03-23 Sun

Making my way through this along with Fr. Mike’s podcast. I haven’t come to anything particularly unfamiliar but reading this alongside some history helps give context to some of the things the book emphasizes.

The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride 2025-03-23 Sun

I’m only one chapter in but has been great so far. The writing style is a pleasure to read and the way the author describes the Jewish community of the opening character is very vivid. It makes me interested to know more about Jewish American culture.

Christianity: The First 3000 Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch 2025-03-23 Sun

This is a great read. It’s long though. I’ve put over 20 hours into it and I’ve only just made it halfway through. I think this will be great for me to study deeply. Jumping straight into theology is often so difficult. Having the historical context makes things more comprehensible.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang 2025-03-23 Sun

The battle scenes aren’t particularly good. The way it transitions from their education to the war is pretty abrupt. I also can’t see how people would be skeptical of magic when it’s so important to the war. There are also so many characters and they’re pretty poorly characterized.

Byzantium by John Julius Norwich 2025-03-23 Sun

An interesting history. I started reading this to complement my self-study of Roman history at the beginning of last year. I still need to go through and make notes on all I’ve read.
